Interestingly, based on years of research, there appears to have only been one Cyrenius Tappan who is shown in any online records. He was the son of Charles Tappan and Phebe (McNeil) Tappan, and a younger brother of Ruth "Lamira" (Tappan) Wilson, first wife of William Armour Wilson.

The Cyrenius Tappen in Greenwood Cemetery died prior to the start of the oldest remaining cemetery records. In fact, he died before Greenwood Cemetery was opened. Therefore, he had to have been buried elsewhere and moved to Greenwood. He is buried on the lot owned by William Armour Wilson. Although neither the informant nor the person writing the note is identified, a scrap of paper stuck into the Greenwood Cemetery Lot Book indicates that Cyrenius was an in-law of the Wilsons.

Based on this information, the identification of Cyrenius as Lamira's brother would appear to have been rather straight-forward. However, there are two issues. One is that the dates on Cyrenius' marker are completely wrong for Lamira's brother. Another is that The Ogden Family in America, Elizabethtown Branch and Their English Ancestry: John Ogden, the Pilgrim and his descendants 1640-1906, William Ogden Wheeler, J.B. Lippincott Co, Philadelphia 1907(?), page 222, which identifies Cyrenius as the son of Charles and Phebe, also reports that he died on 22 Apr 1849 in USA, NY, Montgomery, Fort Plain.

It is clear that there are mistakes for Charles and Phebe's family in Ogden Family, most of which relate to the dates and places of death of four of their children, which appear to have gotten scrambled. The only known name issue is that daughter Lamira is identified as Lavinia. "Lavinia" is shown with the same date of birth as is known by family to have been Lamira's date of birth, but her death information states: "d. Clement, Ill., Oct. 13, 1873." Ibid. This is the same date and place of death as is given for "Lavinia's" next older sibling, Jacob. "Lavinia's" next younger sibling, Juliette/Juliaette (Tappan) Sears, has death information which states: "d. Wilson, N.Y., 1864." Ibid. This is, of course, Lamira's death information. Juliette/Juliaette actually died on 17 Aug 1895 in USA, NY, Saratoga, Ballston, and is buried in Briggs Cemetery in Ballston Spa.

Memorials on Find-a-Grave for the Tappan family in Fort Plain Cemetery, USA, NY, Montgomery, Fort Plain, include a marker photo for Cordelia Tappan. Her marker identifies her as the daughter of Charles and Phebe Tappan. Cordelia was the child born next after Cyrenius. Her marker is very weathered, and was originally read as saying that she died in 1819, at age 21 years, which calculates to a date of birth in 1796. This is obviously impossible, as Charles Tappan was born in 1792, and Phebe McNeil in 1793. However, as everyone who has spent time in an older cemetery knows, a weathered 4 can easily be misread as a 1 because the down- and cross-strokes on a 4 are not as deep as the rest of the digit, and disappear sooner. Using the date of 1849 as her date of death, her date of birth calculates to 1826, the same date of birth as appears in Ogden Family. It thus appears that it was Cordelia, not Cyrenius, who died in Fort Plain in 1849.

That leads back to the beginning - the Cyrenius Tappen buried in Greenwood Cemetery on the lot owned by William Armour Wilson was the younger brother of William's first wife, Ruth Lamira Tappan. However, the dates on Cyrenius' marker are still no where near the dates for Lamira's brother.

Cyrenius' marker is a replacement stone in the same style and with the same apparent age as replacement markers for other members of William Wilson's family. Family has stated that the older markers were replaced. Unfortunately, there are mistakes on some of those replacement markers. Please see the Memorials for Alexander Wilson Jr and Lamira for discussions of the errors on their replacement markers.

In all probability, considering the time of his death, Cyrenius' original marker stated his date of death and age at the time of death. Like Alexander's and Lamira's replacement markers, a weathered 4 was almost certainly mistaken for a 1, and his date of death was read as 1816, when it was actually 1846. His age at the time of his death was used to calculate his date of birth. A date of birth of 1795 and a date of death of 1816 indicates that his age at the time of his death was about 21 years. Using that age with a date of death of 1846, indicates that he was born about 1825. His date of birth is given in Ogden Family as 18 Aug 1824.

The dates given on Cyrenius' memorial are the dates which are believed to almost certainly be correct, rather than the dates shown on his replacement marker. He is identified as the son of Charles and Phebe (McNeil) Tappan, and therefore the brother of Ruth Lamira (Tappan) Wilson and the brother-in-law of William Armour Wilson.
