Gary is the son of Herman Darrell and Sarah Fern Carter-Potts. He married Patricia L. Fife in Ely, NV on Oct. 10, 1971. They have four children: Susie (Carter) Strickland, Darrell Carter, Samantha Carter, and Gerri (Carter) Perez.

Gary served in the US Navy on the USS Hornet, based out of Long Beach, CA from Sept. 1965 to Sept. 1969. Gary was a Vietnam Veteran. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and two Bronze Stars.

Gary worked for Turpins in Salt Lake City from 1971 to 1976; Dayton of Ogden from 1976 to 1997; Dakota Mills for one year; Autoliv for one year, and just started working for the IRS when he passed away. Gary graduated from OW-ATC as a Data Processor on Nov. 6, 2001.

Gary enjoyed bowling, working on vehicles and playing pinochle.

Gary died of a heart attack at the age of 55.
Funeral services were held Febrary 20, 2002.
His obituary appeared in The Daily Herald newspaper, Tuesday, Febrary 19, 2002 (page A5).
