He was born July 9, 1940 in Alton, the son of John and Nina Koehne Henkhaus.
John was employed for 20 years for the State of Illinois Department of Personnel and later employed by Dickey John Corporation. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Virden and the Virden Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are three daughters, Michele (Dave) Bates of Auburn, Kris (Dirk) Arends of West Des Moines, IA, and Dawn (Bill) Bird of Morrison; two sons, Craig (Trish) Henkhaus of Geneseo and Ken (Lou) Henkhaus of Palos Verdes Est, CA; twelve grandchildren, Danielle and Michael Bates, Sam, Ben and Liz Arends, Will, Grace and Andy Bird, Zach, Peter, Luke and Amelia Henkhaus; one brother, Mick (Kim) Henkhaus of Bethalto; one sister Jeanne (Tom) Nelson of Glenview; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at St. Benedict's Church, Auburn, with Rev. Daren Zehnel officiating. Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of prayer service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Paynic Funeral Home in East Alton. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Alton.
Memorials may be made to Heritage Manor in Carlinville or Virden Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund.
