He enlisted in Co. C, 1 Georgia Infantry, during the Mexican War serving as a Sergeant in Lt. Statton's company, Col. Jackson's Regt., Georgia Volunteers and later (1888) received a U.S. pension based on this service.
During the Civil War, he formed a company called "Stephens Infantry" in Mitchell County, Georgia and was elected Captain. This company eventually became Company E, 17th Georgia Regiment in Bennings Brigade. Capt McGregor served briefly as the regimental commander for the 17th Georgia from Sept - Dec 1862, including the battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg).
He was wounded in the left arm during the second day of the battle of Gettysburg (during the attack on Devil's Den) and returned home to recuperate. In March of 1864 he resigned his commission. Following the war, he was elected one of two representatives from Mitchell County to the 1865 Constitutional Convention for Georgia.
John A. McGregor married Margaret Jane Johnston 12 June 1849 in Randolph Co., GA. They had 9 children who lived to adulthood. In 1870 he and his family moved from Mitchell County to Baker County and lived on a 1500-acre plantation. He and Margaret are buried in the "McGregor" cemetery in Baker county, though its exact location has been lost over the years.
