Private services for Charles Baumberger Sr., president and general manager of the San Antonio Portland Cement Co., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Porter Loring chapel, interment will be in Mission park.
A life-long resident of Bexar county, Baumberger died Thursday at his home 324 W. Lynwood ave. He would have been 85 on Jan. 27. He is survived by a son, Charles Baumberger Jr.
Baumberger's parents came to Texas from Switzerland in 1856, landing at Indianola. They lived at Helotes, where Baumberger was born. The family later moved to San Antonio living in an Irish flat on the alley off Third st. Baumberger attended the old German-English school located at Navarro and Houston sts.
As a young man he was bookkeeper for the Kalteyer & Son Drug Co., and the Alamo Ramoan Portland Cement Co., the first cement manufacturing company west of the Mississippi river. In 1895, Baumberger became general manager of the company. It was reorganized in 1903 under its present name.
