J.C. Thatcher, a native of Bourbon County, Kentucky, was raised in Calloway County, Missouri, then moved to Adair County, Missouri, in 1846, making him one of Kirksville's earliest residents. He owned and operated a mercantile store for nearly 30 years then, after retiring from that business around 1873, ran a successful insurance agency until his death. Thatcher was first married to Mary Baker Griffith of Calloway County and after her death to Mrs. Eliza (Sappington) Carter. [Review; Democrat obit]
