James Lafayette Ownbey was born to Martha Ann Morgan and Porter Ownbey on December 17, 1797, in Buncombe County, North Carolina.

On August 17, 1820, he married Elizabeth Rebecca "Betsy" Oxford. Five children were born of this marriage:
