Obit for Roberta C. Heyer

Roberta Calvert Heyer, a landscape artist, educator and civil rights activist, died of cancer Sunday in her San Diego home. She was 77.

Mrs. Heyer's acrylic paintings, which reflected the influence of 20th century cubists, were displayed over the past 20 years at such venues as the San Diego Museum of Art and the San Diego Art Institute.

A San Diego State graduate with a master's degree in Art History, she taught elementary school in the 1950's and art history from 1976 to 1989 at Cuyamaca and Mesa colleges.

During the 1960's, Mrs Heyer served a term as vice president for Citizens of Racial Equality. She was appointed in 1963 by then San Diego mayor Pete Wilson as San Diego's representative to the county Human Relations Commission.

Her knowledge of historical architecture also led to her appointment by Mayor Wilson to the Old Town Planned District Review Board where she served for five years.

Mrs. Heyer, a native of Medina, Ohio, had lived in Encanto since 1958. In the 1960's, she organized workshops at Encanto Elementary School that were designed to provide art education and experience to pupils.

She also helped organize human relations programs and workshops in San Diego schools designed to promote racial harmony and understanding.

She and her husband, Warren, frequently visited Mexico and Europe, where she photographed monuments of western civilization that inspired her paintings and provided background for her classes in art history.

In addition to her husband of 43 years, she is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Frank of San Diego, and Robin Kuntzelman, of Bozeman, Montana; a son, Andrew, of Mission Viejo; two sisters, Reba Gehring of San Diego and Ruthie Packard of Pensacola, Fla; and eight grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Jan 27 at Lemon Grove United Church of Christ, 2270 Glebe Road. Donations are suggested to Greenpeace, the Lemon Grove United Church of Christ or a favorite charity.

Howard Root Calvert (1891-1924) was the father of Roberta Maude Calvert. He died in a plane crash and his burial site is not yet known.
