Charles H. Hill was the fifth of eight known children of Dempson Hill (1805-1887) and Mahala Hulett (Hewlett) Hill (1808-1881), who married in 1830 at Mason County, Kentucky. By 1832 the family was living at Putnam County, Indiana where Charles was born in 1837. The family was still living at Putnam County, Indiana in 1850, and they were living at Davis County, Iowa in 1860 where they spent the remainder of their lives.
Charles married Martha Ann Rominger (1840-1912) on 24 Dec 1857 in either Indiana or Davis County, Iowa. Martha and Charles were the parents of ten children, of whom six are known, all of six of whom lived to maturity. There were five boys and one girl among the six. All six were still living when Martha died in 1912. The first three of the six were born at Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa (1) Paschael Mayme Hill; 2) Estus (female) Hill and 3) Elta M. Hill. The fourth child, Charles Hill was born at Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri in 1871. The fifth child, Albert Hill was born at Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas in 1875. The sixth and final child, George W. Hill was born at Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
In 1880 the parents and first five living children (Charles a lumber dealer) were living at Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Charles was the first major of the city (now part of Portland) of Albina, Multnomah County, Oregon. In 1900 the parents and three of the children (Charles listed as a real estate agent) were still living in Portland. Martha said she was the mother of ten, six living. The six known children of Charles and Martha are:
