Darryl Donald Bathel, 61, of Duluth, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010. He was born March 3, 1949, in Owatonna, Minn., to Donald and Pearl (Nipp) Bathel. Darryl married Virginia Snarski Sept. 16, 1978, in Duluth. He was employed with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Department as the French River hatchery manager and then the production supervisor for the Minnesota cold water hatcheries for 33 over years retiring in 2007. Darryl was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, a member of the American Fishery Society and McCabe Chapter of Izaak Walton League. Darryl was most passionate about canoeing, whether it was a day trip or a wilderness adventure. He made many beautifully handcrafted canoe paddles over the years and was recently learning wood-carving techniques. Some of his other hobbies included gardening, fishing and woodworking. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald. ^^Darryl is survived by his spouse, Virginia Snarski, of Duluth; mother Pearl Bathel of Minneapolis; sisters Marlene (Duane) Bergdale of Albert Lea, Minn., and Linda (John Capual) Bathel of Minneapolis; brothers Dave (Jo Ann) Bathel of Eagle River, Wis., and Dan Bathel of New Brighton, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. VISITATION: 4-7 p.m. with a 4 p.m. prayer service Sunday, Nov. 7, in Dougherty Funeral Home and 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday, Nov. 8, in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.,Duluth.
