Virgil Ryan, 91, of Burlington, Kansas, passed away Friday afternoon, November 19, 2010, at the Life Care Center in Burlington.

He was born August 22, 1919, the son of William Homer and Clara Ellen (Stewart) Ryan.

He attended rural school through the eighth grade then helped his dad and brother on the farm.

On August 1, 1941, he joned the United States Army. He spent thirteen weeks at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, before going to Fort Dix, New Jersey. In February 1942 he was sent to Brisbane, Australia, where he was an M. P. Sergeant of the 814th Battalion. In 1943 he was stationed at Melanie Bay, New Guinea and then on to Lae, New Guinea to prepare for the Luzon Invasion. He was discharged on May 31, 1945 and was awarded the American Defense Service Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star.

He was a Life-Member of Congdon-Kepler Post #38 of the American Legion in Burlington.

Following the War Virgil returned to Kansas and was employed for the Good Year Tire plant in Topeka for four years. In 1951 he moved back to Burlington to raise cattle and hogs and to farm. He farmed until his health failed in 2009.

On August 14, 1954, Virgil and Flore Lee McGee were married at Emporia, Kansas. They were blessed with two children, Sharon and Bill.

They lived on a farm west of Gridley until moving to Doc McConell's farm west of Burlington in 1956 where they made their home until 1966 when the family moved into Burlington.

On April 2, 1998, Virgil and Flora Lee suffered the loss of their son, Bill.

Flora Lee also preceded Virgil in death on January 9, 2009.

Virgil remained in their home until August of this year when he moved to the Life Care Center.

Virgil was also preceded by a brother, Henry Ryan, and a sister, Frances Watt.

He leaves his daughter, Sharon Lingenfelter and husband Steve of Gridley, and two grandchildren Laci Lingenfelter, Topeka, KS, and Josh Lingenfelter, Manhattan, KS.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial with military honors will follow in Graceland Cemetery, Burlington.

The family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gridley United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
