In 1900, Claudia (aka "Clody") lived with her parents, her four brothers (Charley, John, Clyde, and Frank) and her sister (Iva Reynolds) in Butler, (Hancock County) WV. Claudia was the baby of the family.
In 1910, Claudia lived with her parents and her 3 brothers Charly, John W, and Clyde C at 2108 Nevada Street, in Wellsville Ohio (in Columbiana County). Both her brother Frank and her sister Iva died sometime between 1900 & 1910. Her dad was working as a Sawyer at local saw mill.
On September 2, 1916, in Mahoning County Ohio, she married Ralph Elwonger. Date and location are per their marriage record, posted to ancestry.com by user Connie Grimm in June of 2019. Claudia and Ralph had one son, John Raymond Elwonger who was born April 5, 1917.
By 1920, Ralph had served a short time in service during WWI, and the couple was (geographically if not maritally) separated at the time of the US census done in January 1920. Claudia & John were living with her mother, and brothers John & Clem. She was working as a "Finisher" at the local pottery. Ralph was living with his parents & his brother Raymond. Ralph died on February 15, 1920, shortly after the census was done (his cause of death was listed as pneumonia secondary to influenza).
On December 15, 1921, Claudia gave birth to her second son, my father, Luther Roland Elwonger in Beloit Ohio. According to family reports and his birth certificate, his father was Allen Baker. I have not been able to verify if Claudia and Allen ever married, but family history suggests they did not.
According to her obituary, Claudia had two stepsons, Clarence and James Wright. Each of their obitaries give Walter N and Pearl Blair Wright as parents. I have found Walter Wright living with Claudia in Salem, Ohio in the 1930 census. According to the census, the couple had been married for three years in 1930. Her son John was listed as living with his grandmother Dora Reynolds in 1930, but I have not been able to locate her son Luther (my dad). Lou would have been 8 years old. Clarence and James were both grown & probably married. Clarence already had his own cab company by 1930, which is probably the same Cab Company that Walter reports being a driver for.
Walter died February 19, 1946, and on Nov 22, 1946, my grandmother married (her third and last husband) Ross Melville Hott. Ross died September 23, 1962.
Claudia remained in Lisbon, with her son John living with her in Pleasant Heights. She died September 13, 1971. At the time of her death she had 10 grandchildren and 10 Great grandchildren. She was a member of the Friends Church of Beloit, and a member of the VFW Auxillary.
Claudia Hott is buried in Grandview Cemetery in Sebring Ohio according to her obituary.
