Helen was born in Enid, OK before OK became a state. After high school in Enid, she attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and received a B.A. degree in Math in 1924, taught high school math 2 years at Eaton Rapids, MI, and went back to the U of M for a master's degree in Math in 1927. She married a classmate, Arthur Bailey, on Feb. 3, 1928, and went with him to Boston, MA in June 1928 where she worked as an actuary for John Hancock Mutual Life Ins Co until their first son was born. They had 4 children, Robert in 1930, Richard in 1932, Christine (Pearce) in 1944 and Margaret (Cook) in 1948. About 1940 while they were living in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, Helen found Herrmann Braunlin, a well known Bible teacher and pastor of Hawthorne Gospel Church, and led her family to attend there until they moved to Elmhurst, IL in 1950. When Arthur, her husband, died in 1954, she moved to Wheaton, IL, close to Wheaton College, where her 2 daughters and son Richard attended and graduated, and where she took some classes herself in NT Greek.
