Charles Baker was a son of Esaias and Mary? Baker, pioneer settlers of Coshocton County, Ohio. He married first Charity Taylor of Franklin Township on 15 March 1828. They lived in Linton Township near Plainfield. Charley inherited the home property upon his father's death by buying out all his siblings or their children.

Charity and Charles had 12 children with nine living to adulthood. After Charity's death in 1861, Charles remarried to Eliza Wilson, on 3 October 1867. Five years after their marriage, Eliza died at the age of 48.

Charles married for a final time to Sarah Johnson on 6 May 1875. Sarah was a companion and helpmate in his sunset years. Charles Baker was a member of the Plainfield Methodist Church for 55 years, a church that his father founded along with other early settlers in the township. His obituary remarked that Charley "was a clever man, a good citizen, a kind husband and father, a man on whom you could rely when his word or his obligation was out."
