Charles Herbert Gass

Charles Herbert Gass was born on January 12, 1887, son of James L and Mary J. Gass, their first son.

Only a short distance from the place of his birth west of Edgar, Mr. Gass, known affectionately as "Charlie" passed away at his home in Edgar, Nebraska, March 28, 1950, at the age of 63 years, two months and 17 days.

His membership was with the United Brethren Church, north of Nelson, Nebraska.

For four years following his marriage to Edith L. Miners on April 15, 1914, his residence was eight miles southwest of Edgar after which time the couple moved to Edgar and engaged in the grocery business. In this capacity he served the community for 16 years, during which time he was a member of the city council and board of education.

In the year 1935 a move was made to a farm four miles southwest of town, but in 1946 he returned to his Edgar home in retirement and failing health.

He had attended Hastings College for a time before his marriage.

Surviving are his devoted widow, Edith; four children, M/Sgt. Vernon Gass of the U. S. Air Force, stationed at Scott Field, Illinois, Mrs. Erma Johnson of Edgar, Byron Gass of Edgar and Mrs. Charlene Harvey of Wayne, Michigan, seven grandchildren, and two brothers, Edward Gass of Denver, Colorado and Ernest Gass of Valentine, Nebraska, other relatives and a host of friends.

"I know the night is drawing near,
The mists lie low on hill and bay;
The autumn sheaves are dewless, dry,
But I have had day.
Yes, I have had, dear Lord, the day
When at Thy call I have the night,
Brief be the twilight as I pass
From light to dark, from dark to light."

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 30, 1950, at 2:30 p.m., at the Edgar Methodist Church with John W. Howard, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Edgar in charge.

Mrs. John Ough and Mrs. Robert Mikkelsen sang "Abide With Me," "In the Garden" and "Good Night Here and Good Morning Up There." Mrs. Lydia Phelps was at the piano.

Casket bearers were C. H. Merrill, Wm. Brooks, Charles Caldwell, Burnett Pearson, Arthur Fuhrer and Fred Schlichtman.

Interment was made in the Edgar Cemetery.
