Mrs. Rawlin G. (Westina) Stoakes, 88, one of the oldest residents of the Traer community, died Sunday evening at her home of pneumonia and complications of age. Born January 14, 1875, in Grant township, Tama county, she was the daughter of Robert and Jane Wilson Whannell, early settlers, As a girl of 11 she moved with her family to Traer. She was graduated from Monmouth college in Illinois in 1897 and taught briefly at Keithsburg, Illinois and in the Traer school before her marriage to Rawlin G. Stoakes, July 9, 1902, at the home of her parents in Traer. With the exception of one year in Gladbrook, the couple resided in the home in which they were married, Mr. Stoakes owning and operating a farm at the southwest edge of Traer.
She was the first woman ever to be elected a member of a Traer school board, on which she served a total of 14 years. She was also an active member of the Ripley Congregational church most of her life. Mr. and Mrs. Stoakes observed their golden wedding anniversary in July of 1952. Mr. Stoakes died in November of 1953. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Evelyn) Wilson of Traer, and Mrs. Harold (Jean) Mohler of Maxwell; a brother, Henry J. Whannell of Traer; three grandchildren, Richard Mohler of Maxwell, Mrs. Paul Viers of Maxwell, and Ellen Wilson of Traer; and five greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted 2 p. m. Wednesday at the Erickson Funeral Home with the Rev. Alvin Boettcher, former pastor of Ripley Congregational church, now of Belle Plaine officiating in. the absence of a regular pastor at the local church.
Honorary pallbearers were John Ames, Fred Whannel, R. P. Young Sr., Dave Young, Dr. F. G. Murray, and Dr. C. H Brown. Active pallbearers were Harold Stoakes, Murray Whannel, Robert Crawford, Lee Mohler, Donald Scars and Roy L. Kern. Mrs. Franz Rousenberger of Iowa Falls, a niece of, Mrs. Stoakes, was organist., Mrs. Iris Bohnsack, Mrs. Virgil Creswell and Louise Sieh were in charge of flowers: Burial was in Buckingham cemetery.
