John Henry (Long John) Ferguson was the son of Henry Ferguson and Selena Linville. He married Charity Rosetta Johnson (daughter of William Johnson and Temperence Kiser) on February 5, 1866. They had eight children.
He enlisted as a private in the Confederte Army May 30, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant in November 1861. Captured at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863. He was confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington DC and Fort Delaware, Delaware. He was transferred for exchange to City Point, Virginia on May 23, 1863. He was captured again and confined at Camp Chase, Ohio until paroled and transferred for exchange to Boulwares and Cox's Wharves, James River, Virginia, March 10-12, 1865.
