ANOTHER VETERAN GONE
Comrade Carson Answers the Last Roll Call
Just a little while after the sun had sunk into the West last Thursday evening, the spirit of one old veteran, Comrade William H. Carson, answered the last roll call and rested in the paradise of God, leaving the fast depleting ranks of the Boys in Blue here, to swell that grand army of noble heroes who have crossed the great divide, and stacked arms in that camp, where no bugle shall ever sound a charge. William H. Carson was born in Kewanee, Illinois February 7, 1840 and died at Osceola, Nebraska, December 23, 1897, aged nearly 58 years. He was married in Peoria county, Illinois, July 24, 1860 to Miss Helen Hopkins. To them were born six children, five boys and one girl, three boys and the daughter are still living. Comrade Carson was mustered into the U. S. army in 1863 joining the 124th Ills. Vols. In July of the same year he was transferred to Co. E 33d Wis. and served until the close of the war. He with his family moved to Polk county and took a homestead on the Valley in 1873 and five years ago, on account of poor health moved to Osceola where he lived until his decease. Mr. Carson and wife joined the church 33 years ago and he lived a consistent Christian life all these years. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Saturday morning. Rev. J, H. Presson, of Stromsburg, delivering the eulogy and the Post chaplain, Rev. W. R. Adams, offered prayer while Rev. L. F. Smith read the hymns. The G. A. R. took charge of the services at the grave.
