Loren Roy Mathes, son of Lory Roy & Alma Marie Thompson Mathes was born July 2, 1932, at the family farm in Harper Co. Kansas.
He attended the Grove and Harper Grade Schools and graduated from Harper High School in 1950. Loren met Shirley Ione Watkins while he was in High School. They were married on September 30, 1951, in the home of Mr. & Mrs. C.A. Watkins.
At an early age, Loren accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior and followed the teachings of the Lord. He became a member of the Duquoin Church of Christ where he served and worshipped throughout his life.
Loren began a career at Boeing soon after graduation. After 2 years; Loren left Boeing to follow his desire to farm. Loren spent the next 40 plus years farming with his father and after his father's death. He loved the time spent on a tractor or a combine, cutting or drilling wheat. In his spare time, he loved working on and driving fast cars with lots of power.
Over the next 20 years, he welcomed into the world 3 sons, Randy, John and Timothy, and 2 daughters, Shelley and Lori. He spent his days working the family farm and raising a busy family.
In May 1972, he lost his beloved Shirley to cancer. He remarried on November, 17, 1972, to Virginia Hawkins Martin in Enid, OK. They made their home at 1712 Oak, Harper, KS and remain there to this day.
Loren continued to farm and work at Boeing in transportation.
He retired from farming soon after going to work for Boeing. In 2000, he retired from Boeing and started his retirement years. Loren was involved in all his kids' and grandkids' activities. He loved to watch all the sports activities in which they were involved.
Loren became a member of the Masonic Lodge in Harper, KS in October, 1998, and remained a member until his death.
His family continued to blossom with the births of many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, a total of 59 to date with one on the way. Loren loved to have a garden every year, producing many tomatoes which supplied many relatives' meals on a summer day.
Loren passed on July 1, 2009, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. He will be missed by many family and friends. A hole has been left in our hearts that only God can fill.
He is preceded in death by Shirley and his parents. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Virginia, of Harper, KS., and sons; Randy Mathes and wife Marsha, Harper, KS, John Mathes and wife Lisa, Liberal, KS, Timothy Mathes and wife Lisa, Harper, KS, daughters; Shelley Flickinger and husband Ray, Wichita, KS, and Lori Perry and husband Rick, South Bend, IN, 24 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; brother, Harold Mathes, Boise, ID, sisters, Loraine Everson, Seattle, WA, and Ruth Howland and husband Don, Tucson, AZ.
