Bill was the 7th of 9 children born to William Henry and Mittie (Ferguson) Alexander. The family had moved from Piedmont, Alabama to Bauxite, Arkansas shortly before Bill was born. Before the 1920 US census, the family had relocated once more, this time to New Mexico, where they eventually settled in the coal mining town of Gallup.

In 1942, Bill enlisted in the Army, where he eventually lost a leg during the second World War. However, he never lost his sense of humor, and would amuse his grand-nieces and nephews by unscrewing the leg in front of them.

Bill married Fran, formerly Miss Frances Rebecca Shafer of Kentucky, and they resided in California until her death in 1992. They are buried together in Magalia Cemetery, Butte County, California.
