In the 1900 Federal census for District 11, Township 26, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory the James Day family is listed. James Day is the head of household, is an Indian male, age 40, born Dec 1859 in Kansas. Catherine his wife is an Indian female, age 37, born Aug 1862 in Kansas. They have been married for 19 years and for some reason she listed only 1 child born and 1 living. Clarence Day, son, Indian male, age 18, born Aug 1881 in Indian Territory. Harrison Day, son, Indian male, age 11, born Sep 1888 in Indian Territory. Gracie Day, daughter, Indian female, age 9, born May 1891 in Indian Territory. Leonora Day, daughter, Indian female, age 4, born Sep 1895 in Indian Territory. Loyd Day, son, Indian male, age 3 born May 1897 in Indian Territory.

In the 1910 Federal census for District 0256, Jackson Township, Washington County, State of Oklahoma we find the family of James and Katie Day. James is listed as the Head of the household, he is an Indian male age 54, born in Kansas. Katie is listed as his wife, an Indian female age 45, born in Kansas. They have been married for 29 years. To this marriage, 10 children have been born with only 4 surviving. In the household the following individuals are listed. Gracie Schaler is their daughter and is an Indian female age 18, born in Oklahoma. She has been married 4 years and has had two children with one surviving. It is noted that her husband is not listed. Nora Day is listed as their daughter, an Indian female age 14, born in Oklahoma. She is single and has had one child who is still living but the child is not listed. Emmit Schaler is listed as their grandson and is an Indian male age 3 born in Oklahoma. Arch N Steward is listed as a boarder. He is a white male age 23, born in Virginia.

In the 1920 Federal census for district 277, Jackson Township, Washington County, Oklahoma, Katy Day is the head of the household and is an Indian female, age 47, born in Kansas, and is a widow. Our date of death for her husband James is 1922 which is on his headstone, so this is rather interesting. Lucile Shailer is her granddaughter, an Indian female, age 8 and born in Oklahoma. Emmit Shailer is an Indian male, age 12 and born in Oklahoma. These are more than likely the children of Grace (Day) Shailer or Shaler per the 1910 census. I have not researched her further. Nora Day is listed as Katy's daughter, an Indian female, age 24 born in Oklahoma. She is also listed as a widow.

I have not found Nora in the 1930 Federal Census yet.

The 1940 Federal Census for Jackson Township, Washington County, Oklahoma, lists Nora Layton as the head of the household, an Indian female, age 46, born in Oklahoma and married. No listing for her husband. Walter Baughman is her son and is an Indian male, age 26, born in Oklahoma. He is married but no listing for his wife Ada who was still living at this time. Billie Baughman is listed as son, but is Walter's son, so should be listed as grandson of the head of household. He is an Indian Male, age 2, born in Oklahoma. A boarder, Floyd Henry is an Indian male, age 37, born in Oklahoma and is single. Emmit Shaler is listed in the next household as head, an Indian male, age 33, born in Oklahoma. More than likely this is Nora's nephew that was listed in the 1910 and 1920 census.

Her first two children of record were by Arch Stewart.

I am in contact with family for Nora and Howard Baughman and am in the process of disseminating the information. Hopefully in the near future we can have as accurate a record for this interesting and historically connected family as is possible.

Suggested edit: Nora Day is listed with her parents, James and Katy Day in the 1896 Cherokee Census of Delaware by blood, Citizens of Cooweescoowee District, Cherokee Nation. Her age shows 1, but something illegible appears to the right of this which could indicate 1 month. Her siblings Clarence (age 15), Harrison M (age 7), and Ida (age 3) also appear.

Please consider adding this information to her profile. Thank you for this memorial, your hard work and time. I wish your experience had ended more positive. God bless.
