A message from Mrs. W. E. Soule from Long Beach, California, to her husband in Traer brought word of the death her mother, Mrs. Catherine Richey, about 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, in hospital in Long Beach. Mrs. Richey had been seriously ill only about three or four weeks and was in the hospital only about two weeks. She had been taking treatments of late for diabetes. Mrs. Soule was with her during the last week, arriving there March 29.

The body is to be brought to Traer by Mrs. Soule for the funeral and burial. She will arrive next Monday. Arrangements for the funeral had not been made yesterday. The son, Will Metcalfe, and wife of Mt. Clemons, Michigan and grandchildren, Donald Soule and Mrs. Hugo Trueter, of Detroit, are on their way to Traer, and will arrive today.

Mrs. Richey was about 77 years old, a native of Canada, but more than fifty years of her life were spent in Traer. She married Thomas Metcalfe fa Grundy county, June 5, 1882, the couple coming to Traer immediately after their marriage. Mr. Metcalfe, a building contractor in Traer more than forty-five years, built hundreds of buildings of all kinds in and around Traer, employing a large crew for many years. He was noted for his thrift, strict attention to business and unquestioned integrity. Mr. Metcalfe died in Traer in 1925. On January 3, 1929, Mrs. Metcalfe was married in Long Beach, California, to Thomas W. Richey, of Panora, Iowa. The couple divided their time between California and Panora until Mr. Richey's death in February 1932. Since his passing, Mrs. Richey had lived in Traer a part of each year with Mr. and Mrs. Soule.

Mrs. Richey in her long residence in Traer took a keen interest in all community affairs. She was the devoted mother of three worthy children and was esteemed as a neighbor. The children are Mrs. Ethel Soule, of Traer; Mrs. Flossie Denger, of Dows, Iowa; and Will D. Metcalfe, of Mt. Clemons, Michigan There are seven grandchildren. Mrs. Richey was a member of the Methodist church of Traer, and of the Eastern Star order.
