Stephen graduated from Patterson Union High School in 1931, and later from the state university.

A farmer, he was in charge of the fruit crops at the El Solyo Ranch for many years until it was sold, and then he became an apricot farmer.

He served as a charter director of the California Apricot Producers Association, a member of the El Solyo Volunteer Fire Department, a director of the West Stanislaus County Rural Fire Protection District, and a member of the Patterson Lions Club.

He married Catherine Luce in November 1939 in San Jose.

He was survived by his wife, two brothers, and two sisters.
