The Unfortunate
Once upon a midnite beery, as I pondered weak and bleary
Over many a quaint and curious flagon of forgotten brew.
Suddenly there came a burping as of someone gently urping
From a much to(sic) frequent slurping of a potent mountain dew.
II
Is this fellow celebrating: or his troubles expurgating?
Haste me! I should see what caused his plight.
Be he gentleman or vermin, I his status to determine
Opened wide my door and made a light.
III
There I found a creature loaded; for a wonder not exploded
But compassion turned to pity all my sneers.
For he told me he was stinking all because he had been drinking - A concoction mixed by Army Engineers.

Poem called "FILFULMENT" written by James Lewis Foster. He gave this poem and a $20.00 bill to married couples as they rushed off on their honeymoon. This was in addition to any other gifts he and Lou Ellen (Smith) Foster gave the couple.

FILFULMENT

When all the pomp and splendor
of the wedding day is done;
When the happiness you're planning
is actually begun;

When you've hit the trail together
and just you two are there;
And your hearts are light as feathers
and you're letting down your hair;

When organ notes are faded
and you're feeling glad and free;
Accept this friendly token;
Have a hamburger on me!
