Daniel married Martha Ann Howell on November 12, 1856, in Clarke County, Alabama, and they soon after moved to Moffat, Bell County, Texas, where he farmed and ranched.
Daniel entered the Confederate army as a Private in the 14th Field Battery (Dashiell's Company), Texas Light Artillery. He ended the war as a Private in Company F, 28th Regiment (Gray's), Louisiana Infantry, listed on "Roll of Prisoners of War, Paroled at Natchitoches, La., June 7, 1865. Res. Belle Co., Tex".
From Bell County, Daniel moved his family to Goldthwaite, Texas, then to the Shaw Bend area of San Saba County, along the Colorado River. Martha died in 1906, and he died on February 11, 1908, having lived a long life of 81 years, and was buried in the Shaw Bend Cemetery. His tombstone shows his death as 1907, but the death certificate states 1908.
