FUNERAL OF R.R. Smith-Was a Pioneer of the Coast-
-The funeral of R.R. Smith, aged 65 years, who was found dead in his houseboat at Bennett's Bay last Tuesday, was held from the chapel of the Coeur d'Alene Undertaking company yesterday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Hodgson officiating. There was a large attendance and the services were impressive.
-Mr. Smith left Indiana when a small boy and journeyed to the Pacific coast, settling in the Puget sound country in 1847, and after living at different places, settle in Tacoma where he was connected with the early navigation and trade from the Orient. During the first boom of Spokane he visited that city where he engaged in the painting business, being an expert interior decorater, and amassed considerable money which he invested in real estate, being worth at on time in the neighborhood of $50.000. During the panic of 1893 he lost practically all of his fortune. He came to Coeur d'Alene in 1891, being attracted by the opening of the portion of the Coeur d'Alene reservation. He was again force to take up the painting trade for a short time and later secured some real estate in the business district which his wife now owns. During the reaction that followed the first boom of Coeur d'Alene, he loaned some money which was never paid back. Being of a generous nature he did not take kindly to being cheated out of his hard earned money, although he said but little. A natural born frontiersman, fond of out of door life, he secured a houseboat which he maintained about the lake, spending much of his time away from home and alone. It was in this houseboat that he was found stricken with heart failure and dead. He was connected with the early growth of the city and is very widely and favorably known. The Smith estate, valued in the neighborhood of $10,000, being chiefly property in the business district, yields an income sufficient to insure his family comfort.
-The funeral was notable for the presence of many of the older residents of the city, their number predominating. They had gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to one of their number who had mingled with them, shared their joys and sorrows, and endured the hardships of laying the foundation for what is become a leading city of norther Idaho.
