Mr. Vernon Lavon Morgan, age 62, died Monday at his residence in Nevils. The Bulloch County native lived in Savannah as a youth and returned to Bulloch County after retiring from the United States Army as an E-7. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Vietnam War. During his military career, he also served in Germany and Korea. Mr. Morgan was awarded many commendation medals including a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the National Defense Service Medal and others. After his retirement from the Army, he was commissioned by the governor as captain of the Georgia Defense Force. In 2003, Mr. Morgan retired from International Paper after several years of service. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Kicklighter Morgan Ranew of New Orleans, La.; and his father, Henry Lavon Morgan of Savannah.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Shawn Waldrip of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Shebia Spurgeon of Leesville, La.; beloved brothers, Robert Wayne Morgan of nevils and William R. and Anne Morgan of Hammond, La.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Frederick Joyner of Nevils and Betty and Roger Cochran of The Villages, Fla.; six grandchildren, four nieces and two nephews.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Jake A. Futch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Correll officiating. Burial will be in the Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.
