Honora Dunn was born on May 15, 1843 in County Kerry, Ireland. She was the daughter of Thomas Dunn and Catherine Crowley. Honora came to the United States with her father and brother, Daniel, in about 1852. It is unsure whether her mother died on the journey, or died in Ireland. Honora's father and brother stayed in Iowa for a short time before deciding to move west to California. Honora was left behind in the care of her uncle, William Crowley, with the intention that her father would send for her at a later date. By the time her father sent word for her, Honora was engaged to be married and stayed in Iowa.

Honora married Francis Bernard McDermott on February 11, 1866 at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid. Honora and Francis had ten children - Priscilla, John P., Francis B., Catherine Ann, James C., Maria E., Michael M., Daniel A., William J., and Thomas.

In 1918, the Spanish influenza epidemic reached across the land. Honora's family was not spared. Although her son and daughter-in-law would recover from the influenza, her nine-month old granddaughter, Honora McDermott, died in October of 1918. Six days following her granddaughter's death, Honora also became a victim of the flu. She died near Placid at the home of her son, Thomas, on October 30, 1918.
