He is the son of Thomas and Polly (Harris) Simmons Ashley.

A 19 year-old Farmer from Freetown, MA, Ashley enlisted at Boston on August 12, 1862 and was mustered that same day into the 18th Mass. Infantry as a Private in Co. F. Per records he was 5 ft. 4 in. tall, with a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair. Ashley was engaged with the Regiment in 1862 in the Penisula Campaign, including the Siege of Yorktown, the Second Battle of Bull Run, Shepardstown, and Fredericksburg. He became ill on July 1, 1863, while the Regiment was on the march toward Gettysburg, and was sent to the hospital. He was discharged due to disability caused by heart disease and tuberculosis on Jan. 23, 1864 at Convalescent Camp, Alexandria, VA.

Following his military service, Ashley resided at Freetown until 1887 when he removed to the Plainville section of New Bedford, MA, where he engaged in farming. In later life he resided at Dartmouth, MA. Ashley married Sarah Elizabeth Thurston of Fall River, MA at Tiverton, RI on July 24, 1869. They were the parents of six children, including Irving T., born ca. 1871; David G., born ca. 1877; Owen E., born ca. 1878; Myron, born ca. 1879; Horace M., born Aug. 8, 1882 and Leon Arlington, born April 4, 1886 at Freetown, MA.

Ashley was a member of R.A. Pierce G.A.R. Post No. 190, in New Bedford. Ashley died at age 56 of cancer at Dartmouth, MA on July 2, 1898 and was buried at Shingle Island Cemetery in that town. Sarah Ashley died in New Bedford, MA on Oct. 4, 1927.
