From Holland St. John - "Martha was born May 25, 1762. She was from Blandford, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Very little is known about her parents or siblings. She married Daniel Lucas in 1786 at Colrain, Franklin County, Massachusetts. Their intention to marry was published September 20, 1785. Daniel's sister, Hannah Lucas, married William Brown, brother of Martha. The couple had nine children: William, Andrew, Margaret, Elmena, Caroline, Amanda (my great great grandmother), Daniel, Archibald and Eleanor. Some of her children were born at Colrain on the family farm; however, the family moved to Stockbridge, eight miles from Cazenovia, Madison, New York where the older children were born. They lived here for ten to fifteen years. From there the family moved to Conquest, Cayuga County, New York. Her husband was a soldier during the Revolutionary War prior to their marriage. There is a story told of Martha's experience with the Indians, when she was a young girl. It must have happened about 1780, near Blandford, Massachusetts. Her father was building a new house near a brook. It was summertime and Martha took the clothes to the brook to wash which was some distance from her house. When night came she had finished only the white clothes, so she went into the new house. She blocked the log where she entered with chips and put the colored clothes on the floor to make a bed for the night. Late in the night some Indians appears, went completely around the house, and finding no door, did not examine the cabin for an entrance. Had they done so, the door would have fallen in. They left as they came. Martha stayed still until daylight and then finished her washing at home. Martha passed away in April of 1832 at Cato, Cayuga County, New York, four weeks after her son Archibald died. She died in a little log house which had been built by their son, Daniel Jr. It stood in the yard near Daniel Jr.'s two large frame houses. Martha's illness was "lung fever" (pneumonia). Her interment has not been identified."
