Jay W. Barber died at his home
Jan: 22,1908, age 38 years 3 mos. and
10 days.

Mr. Barber has not been in robust
health for several years, but failed
very rapidly the past year.

The disease which caused his death,
tuberculosis of the bowels, had been slowly
but surely undermining his constitution
for several years, and medical
skill was unable to stay its progress.
Wednesday morning of last week the
silent messenger came for him. With
his wife and children, his father,
mother and sister and other relatives
gathered around him, trusting in the
Savior whom he had faithfully served
in his dally life his spirit took its
flight and his suffering was over.

Jay W. Barber was born in Monona Township,
Clayton Co., Iowa, on Oct,12, 1869.
He moved with his parents
to Storm.Lake in 1876 and lived in
t h a t vicinity until he attained his
manhood. , On Christmas eve,1891
He was united In marriage to Miss
Ella B.Harvey, at Storm Lake, Iowa
and the next spring they moved to
Vermillion, S, D. where they resided
three years. They then removed to
Newell where Mr. Barber remained
until the spring of 1906.

Nov.3, 1897, his wife Ella died, leaving.
two sons,Townsley and Paul. In
1899 he married Fannie M. Driver, to
which union three children were born.
Emmett W. who died, in infancy, and
Reginald D., and one daughter, May
Luretta In the spring of 1906
Mr.Barber with his family removed to a
farm in Pocahontas couunty,for which
he had traded his stock in his tailor shop.
There he remained until his death.

Mr. Barber united w i t h the
M. E. Church O Newell as a young man.
Upon his removal to Pocahontas county
he took a letter from "the M. E.
church at Newell and united with
the church of the same denomination
at Plover.

Mr. Barber was a member of 3 lodges.
Knights of Pythias , Masonic Lodge and
Modern Woodman.

For twelve years Mr. Barber was in business
in Newell. He was successful because he was
ambitious and strictly honest.
He held a place of high esteem in our town.
Those who were brought in contact
with him instinctively recognized his
genuine worth, he had the personal
attributes which won friends and retained
them. He had a warm aud
generous heart and possessed high
ideals. He was a man among men, a
sincere a n d unaffected christian who
lived his religion in his every day life.

He was a loving, considerate aud devoted
husband and father. In this last
tribute to his life and character we
have attempted to express the feelings
of the friends in Newell who
loved him so well.

Mr.Barber leaves to grieve him his
wife. Fannie, his sons Townsley
aged fourteen and Paul aged twelve
and Reginald aged five years; one
daughter, May Luretta, aged three
years; his father and mother, Mr. and
Q.A. Barber, residing at Quinn,S.D.
two brothers, Claud and Roy,
residing at Wolsey, S. D.; and two
sisters, Mrs. Mamie Morten, residing
at Wynot, Nebr., and Beatrice Helen,
residing with her parents at Quinn,
S. D.

The funeral services were held at
the M. E. church in Newell last
Thursday afternoon. C. J . Robinson,
funeral director, was in charge of the
services, and was assisted by the undertaker
from Plover. Appropriate
music was rendered by a choir composed
of Mrs. I. U. Foley, Miss Mary
Rioltz, J. L. Mankey and J . E. Holtz,
with Mrs. C. J . Robinson as organist.

The pall bearers were C. A. Allison,
Geo. A. Herrick, E.Cunningham,
N. F. Madison, C. A. Collins and Dr.
S. A. Beason. Rev. Ernest C. Richards,
pastor of the church, preached
an appropriate sermon and paid an
eloquent tribute to the life of the deceased.

The floral offerings were very
numerous and mutely attested to the
esteem in which Mr. Barber was held.
The set pieces from the Masonic
lodges at Plover and Newell and from
the Knights of Pythias and Modern
Woodmen lodges of this place were
especially beautiful; At the conclu-
sion of the services the interment
took place in Newell cemetary.

The following relatives and friends
from out of town attended the
funeral:

On behalf of the bereaved wife and
children, the father and mother,
brothers and sisters and his daughter
and himself Mr. Driver requests us to
extend his sincere thanks to the many
friends for t heir kind assistance in
the funeral services of Mr. Barber and
especially to A. J . Davie for his kindness
and thoughtful and considerate
services.
