Jim D. Bick
April 3, 1940-March 18, 2010
Jim D. BICK, 69, of 3501 Country Club Drive, Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 5:10 p.m. Thursday at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Jim was born in Rochester on April 3, 1940, the son of Andrew Jackson and Martiena (Geiger) Bick.
As a high school athlete Jim was a member of the gridiron Zebras playing football for four years. With great pride in 1958 he graduated from Rochester High School. In 1959 he was beckoned by our country and served with the United States Navy in Vietnam from 1959 to 1963 in the Vietnam War. Jim was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post No. 36.
On Oct. 7, 1995, Jim and his best friend, Katrina "Kitty" Shambarger, were married. They enjoyed traveling. Their favorite destination was New Orleans, but they also enjoyed visits to Mississippi, Florida, Las Vegas and California. Many remember Jim and his family providing north central Indiana with the finest concrete. Jim was the owner of Jack Bick and Sons Redi-Mix, and it was a common sight to see the red and white mixers cruising the streets, sometimes with Jim in the driver's seat.
In his early years Jim enjoyed the thrill of racing snowmobiles. He traveled to Colorado many times to compete as one of the top contenders. Jim also looked forward to the arrival of the morels in late May. He enjoyed embracing nature as he hunted with friends. One of his favorite treasures was his 1977 yellow Corvette. Jim was a member of the Fort Wayne Corvette Club and enjoyed the camaraderie and friendly competition at many shows with fellow enthusiasts.
Known to some as the "Gadget Guy," he was a self-described inventor. A few of his most coveted inventions include a gumball machine, an automatic dog food dispenser and a miniature sliding switchblade. Always working with his hands, he enjoyed woodworking and creating special projects for family and friends. To relax he listened to the "Oldies," but also enjoyed country and Cajun music as well.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kitty, at home. Four daughters, Kelley Lease and husband Robert, Rochester, and their children, Meghan and husband Kyle McLochlin and Mallory and Lauren Mitchell; Kristin Wolfe and husband Paul, Westfield, and their children, Kayleigh Jenkins and Karlene Wolfe; Kym Bausback and husband Aaron, Greensburg, and their children, Kate, Abby and Benjamin Bausback; and Nikki Weitzel, Rochester, and her children, Bryce and Reece Weitzel. One son, Shawn Shambarger, Warsaw; a special friend, who was like a brother, Rich Stein and wife Sue, New Haven; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Bick.
A celebration of the life of Mr. Jim Bick will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Paul Tinkle officiating. Friends may visit the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment is at Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in his name to a charity of the donor's choice. Electronic expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family through [email protected].
