Avis...Died December 12. Mrs. Susie Jergins. She came to this country seeking health and had been an invalid for a number of years. Her husband was advised by physicians to travel with her, which he did. After arriving here he was told by the physicians that further travel would be of no benefit. Everything that a devoted husband, loving children and kind and generous neighbors could do was done.
The deceased was born December 17, 1871, and was married to the husband who now survives her April 10, 1892. She became a member of the M. E. Church, So., at Brownwood, Texas in 1891 and remained a constant member. She lived the life and died the death of the righteous, triumphant in the faith that she had a home not made of hands, but an eternal home in Heaven.
Being very prosperous up to the beginning of his wife's illness, when with the hope of her recovery, he severed all business connections and finally cast his lot among us. He has the respect of all who know him, and himself, the little children and the dear old Grandmother, have the sympathy of the entire community.
Note: The obituary incorrectly states Susan Marie's name as Lusie and her marriage year as 1891. Her nickname was Susie and she married William in 1892.
Her husband's business connections were the saw/flour mill of which he was the owner and proprietor. He sold everything and moved to Avis NM where he reestablished his business in the beautiful forests of Otero County, New Mexico Territory and invested himself in the belief that the cure for his young wife's illness could be found in their new community. It was with this unwavering hope, that the young husband sought the promise of a long happy life with Susan Marie, and their children, John Barton, Mary Lee Gertrude, and baby William Edward Jr.
Her baby brother George Washington Phillips also survived her. His memorial is #90078891.
