Daughter and heiress to Sir John Dauney/Dawnay of Mudford Terry and Hinton, Sheviock, Anthoney, Landulph and Portlove, Cornwall, of Goodrington in Paignton, Stancombe and South Allington in Chivelstone, Devon, and Sibyl, daughter of Walter de Treverbyn of Treverbyn, Cornwall.

She was the wife of Sir Edward de Courtenay, son of Sir Hugh de Courtenay and Margaret de Bohun. They had two sons; Sir Edward, Earl of Devon and Lord Courtenay, and Sir Hugh.

The effigies of Lady Emmeline and Sir Edward are in the South transept known as the Dawney aisle.
