From a Florence newspaper:
4 May 1850. "Belle of the West...from the scene of disaster. Mr. John Baungartner, who had a brother lost in the conflagration of the Belle of West, died on the evening of the 26th from burns. Credit is due to Joseph Smith, carpenter, for a coffin and the shroud was furnished by Thomas Hunter, at whose house he died. Mr. Hunter is a poor man, and he has now seven of the unfortunate passengers in his house, for whom he is providing to the extent of his means. He has shown every attention to them and deserves well of every true philanthropist. The persons now remaining there are John Yordy and family, whose son is now lying at the point of death, and his daughter is severely burned, but in a fair way of recovery."
