Christian J. Schroeder, one of Attica's octogenarian residents, and a man who enjoyed the respect and esteem of friends and neighbors, died Sunday morning at 6:30 o'clock at his home on Market Street after a long illness. Over three years ago, in February 1909, he was first taken ill and for the past two months he had been confined to the bed. His death was attributed to old age and general debility. He was 80 years old. For nearly half a century Mr. Schroeder had been a resident of Attica. Born on December 31st., 1831, near Suelze, Mecklenburg, Germany, he came to America in November 1863, and located in Attica where he had since resided. Three years before leaving Germany, on September 14th, 1860, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Bartels, who survives him together with six of eight childern born to them. The Childern are, Mrs. Frank Alexander of Buffalo, Mrs. Ernest Drewett of Conneaut, Ohio, and Miss Reca and William Schroeder who live at home. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Carl Heiden of Rochester and fourteen grandchildern.
Deceased was a member of Einigkeit Lodge, No. 336, D.O.H., being the oldest member of that organization, and a large delegation of the order attended the funeral, which was held at his late home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. A. A. Murch, rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church officiated at the house, and the services at the grave were in charge of the D.O.H. Lodge, The pallbearers were John Krauss, Franz Bruekmaier, Henry Richter, William Sangbush, Gust Schwab, and John White.
Amoug the out of town friends at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Troan and Dorothy Blackburn, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Alexander and childern and Mr. Charles Schroeder of Buffalo, and Mrs. Ernest Drewett and son of Conneaut, Ohio.
