John was the only child of William and Regina Sautter Pinegar. He had a fifth grade education and was a farmer. John married Elizabeth Haas on 20 March 1897 in Wood County, and they had a daughter Elizabeth J. Geneva. Following Elizabeth's death in 1904, John married Nancy Ellen Everett Lashaway on 12 November 1905 in Wood County. Ellen had 2 children from her first marriage: Helen and Homer. John died from uremia at the age of 83 years 3 months and 16 days.
