Joseph R. Bennett, 83, for 53 years a resident of Big Rapids, and one of the city's most prominent citizens, died Friday noon at the home of his son.
Mr. Bennett founded the Big Rapids Electric Company, which supplied the city with power until he sold the plant to Consumers in 1924.
In 1898, he married Alice Lillian Jukes. He was a member of the board of directors for Citizens State Bank for many years, retiring last year. He was the chairman of the bond sales program for Mecosta County during World War II.
