Thomas R. Lewis Sr., 76, of 1614 Ridgeview Ave., died after a long illness Saturday at ManorCare Health Services.

A registered professional engineer, Lewis worked for Armstrong World Industries for 36 years as a senior staff engineer, retiring in 1987.

He was an active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, where he was an elder and served on the administrators' board.

Lewis also was active in the Wheatland Hills Community Association, did income tax preparations for the VITA program with the American Red Cross and was an
avid swimmer at the YMCA.

He was a member of the American Legion post of Lititz.

He received his bachelor of science degree from Bucknell University and his master's degree from Penn State University.

Lewis was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II on the USS Lofberg and the USS John R. Pierce and earning the Victory and Good Conduct medals.

He was married to Nellie Gregory Lewis for 52 years on Oct. 4.

Born in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Catherine Owens Lewis.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Thomas R. Jr., married to Linda Lewis of Lancaster, Gregory O., married to Deborah H. Lewis of Marina Valley, Calif., William R., married to Anita L. Lewis of East Petersburg, and David O., married to Linda G. Lewis of Bedford, Texas; one daughter, Karen L., married to Christopher Braun of Rohrerstown; nine grandchildren; and a brother, the Rev.
Robert Lewis of Lakeland, Fla.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harlan.
