Erected in Memory of Johann Yost Heck, May 10, 1754 - July 20, 1825. Service Record in Revolutionary War- Information gleaned for his Rev. War Pension Application:
Enlisted as a Pvt. in Berks Co. PA on 01 May 1776 with Capt. Henry Christ. 13th PA Regt. under Col. Walter Stuart. Discharged from Valley Forge 01 Jan 1778. Served 20 Months. Battles: Long Island, White Plains, Iron Hill, Brandywine and Germantown.
1820 - Owner of 100 acres land in Preston Co, VA, and in Yohogania Co., VA; and 100 acres in Monongalia Co., VA on which I now live ; 40 acres of which are now cleared. Land is of poor quality. Occupation: retired Blacksmith, wife Susannah abt 50, Children at home: Youst age 21, Sarah 19, George 17, Rachel 15, David 14, Elizabeth 12. Two eldest children may soon leave him. Wife is almost helpless. He has been very much disabled for past 20 years. Due to a tooth pull, he lost the whole of his underjaw for which he wears a constant bandage. Cannot chew hard food, cannot blacksmith anymore. He does not expect to live much longer. (Pension was granted.)
