Listed as "Unnamed infant" in Fort Hill Cemetery records, the baby girl buried here was the third of five children born to General A.J. Alexander, a Civil War and frontier cavalry officer, and his wife, the former Evelina Throop Martin. Of the three daughters and two sons born to the couple, only the last--their son Upton, whose initials U.A. can be seen on the granite footstone in the background--survived to adulthood. The gravestones of the other Alexander children, who died during the Victorian years, have weathered to various states of illegibility, as marble does not withstand the elements as well; this little one's is nearly identical to that of an infant brother who died in 1867. At the time of her death in 1871, her immediate family consisted of her parents and 2-year-old sister "Midge".
