Film director and screenwriter. He spearheaded the dramatic transformation of Spanish cinema underwent in the 1950s and early 1960s. In spite of the harsh censorship that hallmarked Francisco Franco's military and Catholic-inspired regime, he succeeded in directing a series of films that undermined the mores of the Dictatorship and established him as the most important Spanish film director of his generation. Between his productions are: "Welcome Mr. Marshall!", "The Executioner", "Placido", "The Heifer", "Moors and Christians", "All to jail "and "Paris-Tombuctú". During his career he received important awards including the National Film Prize in 1981, the Gold Medal of Fine Arts in 1983, Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 1986, Goya Award in 1993 and was also appointed honorary president of the Spanish Film Academy.

Motion Picture Director. He was probably one of the most respected, successful and talented Spanish filmmakers. He is fondly remembered for his films El Verdugo, Bienvenido Mr. Marshall, Esa Pareja Feliz, Calabuch, Los Jueves, Milagro, Plácido, La Escopeta Nacional, La Vaquilla and París-Tombuctú, his last film. He was the father of singer Carlos Berlanga and Jorge Berlanga.Spanish film maker. He was credited with helping to revive Spain's movie industry after its civil war. He passed from Alzheimer's disease at age 89. He wrote and directed his first short in 1948 and made his first feature film, "Esa Pareja Feliz (That Happy Couple)," in 1951 in collaboration with Juan Antonio Bardem. He was critical of Spain's Gen. Francisco Franco and struggled against strict censorship.
