Lemuel Z. Berry was born on September 27, 1890, in Christian County, Missouri to Joseph Daniel Berry and Louella Mahala Elizabeth Long. He was a Cherokee citizen and served in WWI as a private in K Company, 59th Infantry Regiment, 8th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. He was severely wounded by mulitiple guns-shot wounds near the Bois des Ogons during Phase II of the Meuse-Argonne Campaign on October 6, 1918. He died from his wounds on October 7, 1918, in the Mobile Hospital No. 5 at Bois de Placys near Rampont, France, where he was intially buried.
