The last of the five children of Oliver and Hannah Ashby Wheeler, Caroline moved with her family from Salem to Farmington, Ontario, New York in 1815, then to Freedom, Cattaraugus, New York in 1827. Around 1829, she married Caleb Sawyer, They had Malvina and Henry Oliver, then moved around 1834 to Michigan in company with Freedom neighbors Hazen Jaquish and his sons Azro and Chauncey, where they pioneered in Livingston County. The Stone House replaced the log house where they had Andrew, John, and George before Caroline's death in 1840 at age 29.
