Francis Marion Smallwood was the son of Tom (Thompson) Casper Smallwood according to his MO Death Certificate. He was a stone mason. He was born in Jasper Co., Mo. He married Laura F. Miller in Marion County, MO. They were the parents of nine children. Some of their children were, Casper, Leonadus, Lewis E. (sometimes spelled Louis), John Oliver, James, Edmondson M., and Burt H., who lived up north in southern Iowa. Frank passed away from heart failure, Laura died the next year. May he rest in peace.

The following information was provided by Mr. Richard Smallwood-Roberts, July 27, 2012;

Francis served in the Civil War with the 6 Kansas Cavalry, Union Troop K. Rank of Private. (M542 roll 9). He would have been 15 years old when this regiment formed at Fort Scott, KS, in 1861. Regiment mustered out in 1865. He enlisted August 7th, 1862, and was listed as a deserter on Dec. 8, 1864 at Fort Scott, Kansas. This was a misunderstanding, really. From the records of the Civil War regarding the 6th: "When the command next musters for pay, all men borne on 'Transfer Roll absent without leave,' will be dropped as deserters, with notes as to when and where they quit camp, and letter of company to which they then belonged. When the regiment was mustered out on Dec. 1st, 1864, Francis must have missed his friends or just had enough of it, and skeedaddled back home. He still had an obligtion, since he joined later than original muster in.
