MRS. SAMUEL BATES.
Mrs. Samuel Bates died at her home in Mooers Forks April 15, 1903 after an illness of about eight months, during which time she was a terrible sufferer, day and night, almost without a moment of relief. During the latter part of last August she was taken with rheumatism in her arms and hands, from which she suffered most excruciating pain almost constantly for about four months, when a complication of diseases set in which baffled all efforts of her physicians to help her, until on the above named date death came to her relief.
Mrs. Bates, whose maiden name was Mary Ann Soden, eldest daughter of Samuel Soden, was born in December 1852, being fifty years and four months old at the time of her death. At the age of 17 years she married Samuel Bates, who survives her. One daughter, Jennie, was born to them, but nine years later their home was saddened by her early death. At 23 years of age Mrs. Bates was converted to God under the preaching of the Rev. Mr. Warner, and with three of her sisters joined the Wesleyan church at Mooers.
She leaves to mourn her loss an aged mother, a kind husband and five sisters, Mrs. George Pothier, Mrs. Chauncey Scriver, Mrs. Ambrose Scriver and Mrs. Wesley Durgan [sic., Dougan], of Mooers Forks, and Mrs. Elmer Smith, of South Amherst, Mass. The funeral services were held at the house. A very impressive sermon was preached by the Rev. Wright of the W. M. church of Mooers. Among the flowers that lay on her casket were some sent by her niece, Eva Scriver, of South Amherst, Mass. She was a kind dutiful daughter, a self-sacrificing devoted wife and loving mother, a genial friend and neighbor, shall long cherish her memory.
