David C. Criswell died at his home here this morning after a long illness with complication of diseases. He was over 60 years of age and had once been the landlord of a Greencastle hotel. His wife is dead but he is survived by six children.

The son of Irish-born David & Margaret (Jackson) Criswell, in 1860 he worked his father's occupation of shoemaking and lived with his family in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Chambersburg October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 4 as a private with Co. D, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but discharged by surgeon's certificate March 7, 1863.
He next enlisted at Upton, Franklin County, July 25, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 1 as a corporal with Co. K, 21st Pennsylvania Infantry (182nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864. He last enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 22, 1865, as a private with Co. F, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 20, 1865.
He married Mary Pensinger and fathered David Ellsworth (b. 10/26/64), Margaret V. (b. @1867), Harvey A. (b. 1869), Ellen (b. 11/21/76), and Linn (b. @1879). Throughout his life he worked at a variety of occupations, including laborer, drover, hotel owner, and
stock dealer. Cause of death is listed as "acute nephritis" with "cirrhosis of the liver [and] arteriosclerosis" contributing factors.
