Margaret was the daughter of George and Mary Ann Harkes (nee Cowe) of the Parish of Saltoun, near Haddington. The eldest of seven, she received many rewards in school and Sunday school classes and was able to attend Knox Academy as a young lady. She was engaged to Alexander Lamond, sometime before he left for America in 1902. For seven years she worked as a governess and tutor saving as much money as she could until Alex sent for her in the spring of 1909. They were married in April and settled in Grosse Pointe, and then Bloomfield Hills, Oakland Co., MI. Three daughters were born to the Lamonds: Rosemary, Irene, and Virginia. Margaret was able to go back to Scotland at least four times before her death in 1963. In her later years she resided with her daughter Rosemary.
