James Albert Lewis was born on November 30, 1877, in Union, North Carolina, when his father, Thomas Newton Lewis, was 65 and his mother, Marium Pearl Rogers, was 41. His father died in November 8, 1877, before he was born. At that time, his mother had 8 children, included James, under the age of 14. In 1880, she married John Lee "Leo" Mars.
