Reid Scott Newton, aged 77, of Mid. Rte. 7, Ellwood City died around noon Thursday in his back yard where he had been working. Mr. Newton had been building his rock garden when his wife came out to see how he was progressing and found him dead. Death was due to natural causes.
Born in Wayne Township, August 9, 1876, he was a son of the late Philip and Sarah E. Garner Newton. A retired farmer, Mr. Newton had served as a police guard at Rock Point Park; a former member of the Ellwood police force; former guard at the Aetna Standard plant and the National Plumbing Fixtures Corp. during World War II.
Mr. Newton attended the Slippery Rock Presbyterian church. He had spent his life in this area and on May 2, 1900 was married to the former Lula Cunningham.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lula C. Newton; three sons, Myrrell L. Newton, R. Norman Newton, RD 1, Ellwood City, Carlton D. Newton, California; one daughter, Mrs. Harold Boots, RD 1, Ellwood City; 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one brother John A. Newton, Chicago, Ill.
A daughter, Faye Elizabeth, preceded him in death and he was one of 15 children.
The body is at the Patton Memorial home, Ellwood City where friends may call today and Saturday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home Sunday at 2 p.m. with Dr. W.F. Schelgren of the Wurtemburg Methodist church in charge. Interment will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
